Default big mistake or harmless?

I wasn't thinking today when I went to fill up the RSX and put a full tank of Regular Unleaded 87 Octane in and you are only supposed to use 91 Octane Premium. I read that it is really harmless, is this true? I heard you may have reduced performance and worse gas mileage but thats it. :slap:

yeah...pretty much just reduced performance. Not sure what effect it would have if done repeatedly, though.

Trust me, it'll never happen again.

You can run the car, your knock sensor will kick in when the detonation happens and retard your timing accordingly. Just take it easy until then.

Drive it easy. Octane is simply the resistance to detonation of the gas in the cyliners. So with the very high 11.1:1 compression ratio in the RSX-S, 87 octane gas will detonate before it should causing what is commonly known as "knock". A bottle of octane booster will fix this immediately, but driving easy and waiting to fill up with 93 won't hurt anything.

higher octane prevents detonation. Just don't rev it too high tlll your next fill and you should be fine.

Edit: :werd: wut honda pilot said.

And gunk your injectors like there's no tomorrow.

Drive easy for a half tank, fill it half way up with 93 and continue with your motoring. Nothing bad will come of it.

Now if you put diesel in there, ya you'd be ****ed.

I considered that but thought it would be best to get it completely out of the tank instead of mixing them. :dunno:

It doesn't really matter honestly. The half tank thing is more a peace of mind thing.
