h:Gotta be careful doing that. I tried to send a HUGE package through FEDEX that way, I think I was sending the rear lip to my WW kit. I wrapped the box using brown paper and taped it using duct tape. They made me put a layer of clear tape over every inch of the box
h: It wasnt safe for wet conditions

I read a website once that tried to send all kinds of stuff, unboxed yet with proper postage. A large amount of the objects made it to their destination just fine.
I remember them sending a broom... they put like a dozen stamps on the handle with a TO: address taped to it and left it in a box somewhere. It arrived on time.
