Rick, I'm considering the A85 on amazon for $250 + the batteries and small case.

Or the Minolta Z3, but it's kind of expensive.

I can't remember where but I bought a rapid charger that charges 4 AA to 90% in 2hrs with 4 batteries for $15 and 20 pack of rechargable AA for $15 last year. They were either 2500ma or 3000ma. I think it was 3000.

I think I will stay with the A-series line from Canon. After reading quite a few reviews today and looking at the pictures from each of them, a lot of the more expensive cameras take worse photos (this could be the photographer but I'm sure these people have more experience then me so I'm scared to know what I would do). None I could say were a lot better unless you get over the $600 mark and of course, they should be better. Plus I don't need a ton of manual controls--if I wanted those then I'd get a film SLR.

And it's cheaper. hahehaae

Thanks yous all for the advice though. The Fuji Finepix S line looks nice but not great.

canon. canon has by far the consumer industry's best CCD sensors = best image quality.

The Canon A85 is really freakin nice. Until recently I only really would have looked at a Canon.

You might want to check out the Olympus C-765. 4 megapixels, full manual controls, a 10x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 38-380 mm), and macro focus capability. Pretty much the same feature set as the A85 with the exception of the lens. It can be had for about $300-350.

The Olympus C-770 adds to the C-765, MPEG-4 video instead of QuickTime and an uncompressed TIFF mode to maximize still image quality. These are features that the A85 doesn't have either. It's more like $375-$400.

I'm going to look at them at the store tonight I think then make my decision.

I just don't know how i'd take advantage of 10x optical zoom without an image stabilizer.

The same way people have always dealt with long lenses: lots of light or a tripod.

The old rule is that for whatever lens you use, to make sure the image isn't blurry you need to use a shutter speed at least equal to the focal length. So for a 380 mm lens you would need at least a 1/380 sec shutter speed, or quicker. I'm not sure what the shutter speed increments are on those cameras but at the very least they will have 1/500 and 1/1000 available, and either of those settings will be fine. Those are perfectly useable on a sunny day with a relatively wide aperture.

Ehhhh....I don't buy that for a second since Nikon has bested canon with each model upgrade.

I shoot Canon and I love my Canon gear but the truth is the truth so no point in putting that kind of disinformation out there

A lot of those long-zoom point and shoots have some kinda of image stabilizer on them. For my needs, Canon's A-Series would suit it. But if I wanted something smaller, I would look at their S-Series. But my next digicam would probably be a DSLR, I like the speed h:
