VW has had problems with reliability since they abandoned the air cooled roots. I know many people that have had Golf and Golf based vehicles, not a lot of happy stories on quality and reliability. Get the Turbo if you must get one.

Positives: nice interior, 1.8T engine is pretty nice and easy to tune
Negatives: reputation for bad reliability, clunky shifter, no steering feel, torsion beam rear suspension (not independent), current style of "tuning" is to stick retardedly wide wheels on em.

My friend/former teacher has a 2000 Jetta 2.0 5 speed. Bought brand new. She hates it. It's just not been a very good car for her. Little nagging problems.
Not to mention the characteristic VW/Audi no feel steering :nervous:

snitches get stitches
My friend has had a 1.8t for two years now and he hasn't had a single reliability issue with it. It has a great interior, a nice pull to it, great handling, and it looks nice.

Depending on which stock suspension it has, the chassis can handle pretty nicely up to about 7/10ths but when you hustle it on a twisty back road it gets all discombobulated. At least that's what my experience was with my dad's fwd TT w/ sport package.
Also, right now the only Jetta you can get with the 1.8T is the GLI. It's probably got a similar suspension setup to the fwd TT. I'd say it's a nice package, but it's like $24k. At that price I'd take a hard look at the Mazda6 V6 or maybe even the Subaru WRX. For a little more money you have the Acura TSX, Honda Accord coupe EX V6 6-speed, and Volvo S40 T5.
