There will be another mini-trial, penalty phase. New evidence can be admitted, etc...to determine if he gets death penalty or not.

what do you do when 12 people are sitting there tellnig you that they believe you killed your wife and baby? whether it's true or not.. what do you do?

he was probably in shock. taking it in.
