Computer Wizzes - Spit some game for me!
My Compaq 2100 Notebook's harddrive gives me a warning of imminent failure on every start up, making me push F1 to bypass the warning. So I figure I need to replace it soon h:
Anyway, I looked on newegg for some HD's and I found these.
How do I know what interface I need? The closest thing on my comp HD I could find was "IDE", but there are different sorts of IDE's and I don't know which one to chose...such as "IDE Ultra ATA-6" or "IDE Ultra ATA-5" or "IDE Ultra ATA100"....you get the idea.
Also, how would I install XP pro back onto this new harddrive? Would the bios from my motherboard prompt it?

While it could be spyware problems. It could also be an actual SMART event. We have a sata drive here in the lab that started giving out SMART errors (test machine don't get on the internet at all) and today i came in and the drive died sometime during saturday night to this morning.
RB there is only 1 type of physical interface for laptops. So any laptop drive you get will work. well of course compaq is kind of weird....

John I'd much rather be getting a new hard drive because It's already partitioned into two seperate drives, both somehow got formatted differently (says they are both FAT32, but data transfer inbetween them has been deemed impossible).
Thanks Rick, I needed to hear that

With laptops, the most common cause of startup errors like you are encountering are because of the "SMART" IDE self check. Laptops get banged around often and unless you are very careful with you stuff the drives go out pretty regularly. You can get into the bios to disable that annoying F1 error but your drive is going to fail so you may want to back it up first. You can save alot of headache by buying the new drive now and using norton ghost to make an exact image of your old drive so that you wont have to do any reloading or driver searching.

practically any 2.5" ide drive will work... just get an ata100 drive and like either 5400rpm or 7200rpm...heck 4800rpm if youre on a budget....but i think the price will probably be almost the same h:
