you need two things:

a good lawyer
a good accountant

they will help you get everything started.

80% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years. Of the 20% that survive, 80% of those fail in the next 5 years.

it's often not worth it and you can't write off that much. lastly if you write off too much that sets off alarm bells at the IRS.

I started my own business back in January. Before you do anything else, write a business plan and stick it in a drawer for a week. Read some of the magazines geared toward small businesses (Entrepreneur, Business 2.0, there are others shelved nearby at Borders or Barnes & Noble). Pull out the business plan and revise it.

The business plan is your way of conveying some critical information to the people around you and will help you clarify the idea for yourself. You don't need to go into details like the color of ink on your business cards, but make sure that you have some sort of schedule for income and expenses. Careful planning will save you headaches down the line. By headaches, I mean things like bankruptcy.

You absolutely must incorporate as a business. It'll cost about $500 to have a good lawyer help you do it. You'll enjoy all the legal protection the government has to offer for businesses, including protecting your personal credit and assets.

I do to much personal business.... I took over the family business at 16 REO construction( a remodeling and landscaping business). I got my contractor's liscence eventually. Still run the business but not as much(now starting the off season for the year) I also have my A+ certification so i build and service computers on the side under that business. Also when i turned 18 i got my body piercing liscense/certifiction and ran a business under that for a short time(business didnt last) but i still do professional pierceings but under my own private time.

standard fee for incorporating in CA is ~2500. That's with a discount and by a very capable lawyer with over a decade of experience.

He is good advice Rob, read it again
