not startup and be in the system tray on start up? Some programs don't let you disable that option, like winamp.

Start > Run > type "msconfig" hit OK and go to the Startup tab, uncheck anything you don't want to start at startup

Just kidding! I think then you would open the start menu options... I can't remember tho.

I have windows 2k pro, and I don't have msconfig either. How do I go about this?

and one more thing.
Whenever you install a new program you usually are asked if you'd like to have an icon in the tool bar, on the desktop, or automatically open at start up. Choose wisely because it is a pain in the arse if you don't - blah blah blah blah......

well lets just say this is a program that you can easily uninstall then install again, in this case you can uninstall, and when you re- install it you can just be sure to select the options you want. But watch closely for them because you'll be prompted when you least expect it.

each program has the option to turn it off
you just gotta look for it
winamp:
options -> preferences -> general preferences -> system tray: uncheck
