Default Need pc help

I am beginning to realize my friends are ignorant at best. I was asked to spec out a pc for them, I did and asked them to give me a day before they ordered it so I could make sure everything was compatible. Oh no that wasn't right, it got ordered and now it seems the motherboard can't handle the processor and its somehow my fault.

Well I contacted Asus and they told me that the motherboard did support the processor. Its an Asus P4S800-MX motherboard taking a Intel P4 3.0GHz processor with 1MB L2 cache. Asus' site says that the mobo only supports 512kb of L2 cache but it has a BIOS update that says will make it more compatible with the processor.

Can anyone help me... otherwise its $$$ I am going to lose... please... thanks.

Cliff notes: will the Asus P4S800-MX motherboard support the P4-3E GHz (800 FSB, L2 cache:1MB, HT, 90nm) processor.

what bios is the mobo on? if it's not rev 1005 or later, got a spare P4C? put it in and flash the bios.

So you are saying it should be able to handle 1MB of L2 Cache once I flash the bios. Which is what I thought but this guy, who interestingly is a grad Computer Science student, doesn't know what flashing the bios means. He wants peak performance, so he wants to use all that 1MB L2 cache.

Asus says you gotta flash it with 1005 and beyond. I just gotta convince this guy which isn't going to be easy.

your grad computer science student is a moron if he doesn't know how to flash a bios. that's basic A+ stuff. according to ASUS the bios rev 1005 and later allow for the P4E 1M L2 Cache, while previous revisions did not. i take it cost was an issue? this is an older mobo. why not go with a P4P800-XXXX or P4C800-XXXX series?

I was looking at the P4P800 series because I figured they were more compatible. But, he didn't let me do my homework and ordered the stuff and now its my fault.

Only problem is he hasn't paid me yet, until that check clears I can't do that. Oh and he wants to put this pc together himself, someone who doesn't know the basics of a computer wants to put it together. I know the next story... "Dude all those parts you got me suck because they don't work." Me thinks I should call my bank and find out when the check clears.
