I finally found a guide and a set of tools that makes it somewhat simple and I thought I'd share the wealth:

I found Gordian hard to use for some reason. For the most absolute noob, Dr.Divx's GUI is awesome. And I too use Virtual Dub.

autoGK is uber-easy. btw, xvid is a more efficient codec than divx :dunno:
