Usually I don't complain about work, but today just pissed the living hell out of me.

A little history...

I work as a IT guy for a business branch at the school. I used to have full admin rights because my work involved fixing peoples pcs if they were down and also so I could install/uninstall stuff easily. There is an administrator but all he does is have the key to the server room, his knowledge of pcs ends there. Anyway for the last few weeks whenever something went wrong it was either my fault or the other IT guy's who happens to be Asian too. For instance... someone went into the server room ransacked the place and I was put on trial even though I don't have the key. Well turned out to be another guy in the department. The server went down and I was blamed and told that I vandalized it, later it was discovered to be a power outage.

So I pull into work and look at the plasma screens and realize the power went out again. So I tell the admin guy that before he blames me for crashing the server, which strangely is not on a a UPS back up unit. He then tells me he has magically figured out how to get stock tickers on the plasma screens and says that I couldn't do it and he did it in a hour. I look at the screen and tell him he's done the worse rig job, he didn't use the software for the displays instead minimized a screen to get a stock ticker. I remind him that I had recommended that was a temporary solution a month back but was told not to worry about it since we were getting cable. He then tells me I am not doing my job and that he can do my job better. This really does it for me, I have a dozen or more projects I am working on and all he does is distribute accounting info and hold the server room key. I looked at him and said "Dude I don't tell you how to do your job, and I find it insulting that you are telling me how to do mine. I gave you my expert opinion and you accepted it, now if you want to forget that then its not my problem." So he argues with me and I pretty much told him to shove it and said I was sick of his Nazi behavior and that he was eating the little power he had and imagining himself to be God.

Thats not the issue... he took away my admin rights. Which means I can't update webpages, download mission critial software without asking him. Why the hell am I the IT guy if I can't do shit like that. So I went up to him and asked him where I'd get the passwords when he wasn't there, or where I'd get the server room key to reset it when he wasn't there. He looked at me and goes "How do I update the plasma screens when you aren't here." Wow intelligence at its max, the plasma screens not being updated for an hour won't end anything but the server crashing will.

So in the end the other IT guy and I decided to go and talk to our boss. Turns out this admin dude thinks we are in cohorts because we are both Asian. I looked at my boss and said "I have never met this guy until I started working with him. We interact more because we both have the same projects. You really can't expect me to go up to an accounting guy and ask him for recommendations on scan sensitivity for a biometric device."

So now I think this admin ass has been watching my back because well he just can't stand people who scare him and makes him realize his job is expendable.

Sorry for ranting... I got nothing done because of this guy's Nazi attitude. He still hasn't got me the software I need since I got issued a new pc. Yet, everyone else has all these magical software they don't use and I need.

 

Oh and did I mention this admin ass uses the company server to download illegal software, music, etc. Not only that he uses it to steal software licenses. Something that could get him thrown out and in jail, plus destroy the school. Maybe I outta tell someone that before my ass lands in trouble thanks to his installing illegal shit on my pc.

I came very close to... haven't been this pissed in a while.

 

Its clear your "admin" feels threatened. He can't hack it, and he knows his days are numbered. He isn't competitive in his skill level, so he's desperately trying to "defend" his job.
You did the right thing by going around / over him.
Hopefully, you can sell yourself into the soon-to-be vacant position.

If you're already performing the duties of system admin., then I say you deserve the title and commensurate salary.

 

They won't fire him, he graduates in December and thats all I can look forward to. You think I outta tell someone he is downloading/installing illegal stuff using company time and equipment.

 

if he's downloading shiet illegally and it might get YOU in trouble what are you waiting for to turn him in :slap:

 

I belive the word nazi is over used.

 

I'd advise your boss of the situation, but be tactful.

 

I am wording an email documenting what happened, if things get worse I will send it out. Also I might send an anonymous email regarding the illegal software thing.
