Tech geeks: need some input
Well I suggested the Matrox P650 because of the apps you said you work with. It's a card that's mainly made for people that use apps like that.
It does some 3d but nothing spectaular. It's about onpar with a Geforce 3 as far as 3d goes. But it's about 2 or 3 generations a head nvidia and ati for 2d windows performance and image quality.

As for a video card, I would suggest the ATI Radeaon 9600XT. A good upper-midlevel card.
If you have a little more money to spend, get the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. For about $50 more, you get a significant boost in performance.
If you want to keep some of the all-in-wonder capabilities, i think getting an add-on Video input solution is more cost-effective than the new ATI All-In-Wonders. Leadtek makes a good value card. My buddy just got one and runs a VCR and cable TV into his PC monitor, and it runs like a champ.
I'm currently running an Athlon XP 2500+(overclocked to 3200+ specs) with a Radeon 9600XT and 1 gig of Corsair PC-3200 ram. I can run most games with good detail, and even DOOM 3 (by far the most graphically advanced game on the market) runs fine on medium settings at 800x600.
Arg. I'm trying to add links to Newegg on this, but their server seems to be running RRREEEEEALLLLYYYY slowly. I'll add them in if I can ever get on.

I just build my girlfriend a little shuttle SFF system with an Nforce2 chipet, AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (barton core, 333FSB, 512cache), 512m of PC3200 Crucial memory and a WD 7200 8mb 80Gig HD. That machine is suprising quick considering the age of the components. It was less than $500 including the Shuttle box. I'm just using the integrated Geforce4MX graphics for now (she doesn't play games) but it has an 8x AGP slot I was going to stick a Radeon 9600 Pro in. The integrated graphics also has TV/S-video out and I was going to put my ATI TV wonder card (a PCI based AIW without the 3d accellerator) into it when we move and make it a PVR box.
That box is great for what she uses it for and is speedy enough to do just about anything I throw at it so far. If I was building a system to really push, I would pony up the extra money and go with an Athlon64 chip, gig of memory and one of the new generation graphics chip (6800 or X800) and seriuosly future proof the system.
