Okay, well, I set the drive that is connected to the end ide cable to master, and the drive connected to the ide cable in the middle to slave. I rebooted and the slave drive light is constantly on. The master works fine, but the slave won't even open when I press the button...

try this then, slave the CD drive to the hard drive, leave your origonal one as it was.
then, reboot the computer, and read the first screens. you should be able to see what is hooked up and what is slave/master on the primary and secondary EIDE channels. also, F10 or DEL will get you into the BIOS (one or the other, maybe something else depending on your motherboard/bios). in there, you can see what is hooked up, change the boot order, etc, and see what is what.
