I just didn't care for steam... but I never really play CS anyway.
Maybe I'm not reading all the info or something but from what I see Steam is just an update utility to apply updates and get new downloads for the game.

You have to go into steam in order to play 1.6...It's its own interface that go through in order to log onto independant CS servers.
