Default quick car question

the temperature gauge in my car has never worked. a friend and i tested it before to make sure what it was, but now i don't remember. is it just the thermostat? if i went into an auto store what part do i tell them i need? no bs please, headed out in a few to try to get one. thank you.

If you hadn't changed the Thermostat before, it'd be a good idea to change that as part of maintainence. You'd be better off getting it from the dealer, and while you're there, they might offer some insight. That and there should be the thermoswitch. Check the wiring behind the cluster... That's all I can think of at the moment.

it's the temperature gauge in the engine, i know that. but what's it called? just the "thermostat"?
