Default Transmision problem, help my friend out

Hey guys,

I have a friend with a 98 altima gxe manual 2.4L. Anyway he was doing like 60 and went to shift and someone hit his hand and he popped it into 1st, and caught it and put it back... so now he has a hard time getting it to go into 1st gear, like when he comes to a stop, cars in neutral then he goes to shift into 1st it wont go sometimes, he has to put into 2nd then it will go into 1st... or he has to slowly ease it into 1st gear. I know this is alot to read but i was wondering if you could help us determine whats wrong I appreciate your time. I know its nissan but hey its still foreign

Change the trans oil and see if it's full of metal shavings.

Yea, check the tranny for shavings, sounds like he might have grinded some gears...

Yeah, I'd think that a car of that newness would have a saftey no-you're-not-going-to-shift-you-idiot kinda deal.

I know if I'm doing 100 and I drop it in 1st, it goes straight to third. I know if I'm doing over 20 and I drop it in reverse I hit neutral with nice reverse lights for people behind me.

My mom as a 2000 Altima SE 5spd...In my exprience that tranny can be very difficult at times to shift into gear...I think its a characteristic of the tranny and not confined to some hard shifting in one car.
