Default tires?

What's a good wet/dry tire that has lots of grip, relatively inexpensive, and won't overheat? I don't care too much about tread life, something that will last like 8 months.

Something that won't kill itself going 120+ or not like a few hard corners thrown at it.

Would a DOT legal competition tire last if I'm only using it for 5-6 months? How bad do they get when it gets cooler? If I get a set of winter tires for my stock rims it sounds like a good idea to me. I don't drive much long distance, I just like to throw it around corners around town. Maybe some autocross if I can find some around here.

Check the speed ratings on tires.

It's hard to beat the Falken Azenis as a tyre that's got the most grip for the money. They are also good in the wet. A lot of us use Azenis as our "wet" track tyre... but remember that as that big blocky tread wears down, it will get worse and worse in the wet.

If you have to drive in winter weather, the latest version of the Falken Ziex has impressed me. I have a set on my commuter EP3 and the Ziex seems to come pretty close to the vaunted Azenis when it comes to handling.
