Default Salary requirement????

Well im looking to get a job and the employer sent me an email asking how much i make, and what my future expectations as far as pay goes. I told him that the pay can be negotiable and that i would like to be payed based on work ethic, reliability, and performance. The company is a parts company that provides aftermarket parts for European high end cars i.e. Porsche/audi/bmw. They have race cars and project cars and i will be doing product sales consulting. SO how much am i looking at to make at this?

Umm always give a figure. If you think it will be hard work that requires many hours of work, then price yourself expecting that.

Give them a range with minimum you are willing to get and the max you think they will pay you.

Is there a proper way of giving them figures. I wish i knew how much teh average sales consultant makes especially in this field. I dont want to ask for to little yet i dont want to ask for a whole lot, especially since im goin in knowing one particular model(BMW) when they also specialized in porsche and audi. The ad did say BMW Knowledge is a plus so im hoping me knowing what i know bout bmw's, the fact that i own one, and the fact that i can fix easy to mid difficulty problems will help me in my pay.

maybe do a search on Monster.com and see what the ranges are? :dunno:

I know some companies will give a salary range in their postings on there. HTH

Anytime I was asked that durring an intervue I always say some huge number like $500/hr.

them: and what would you like to be paid?
me: Like or expect... cause I'd like $500/hr.
them: hehe well don't we all. Let me rephrase it...
me: no I understand, I'm just joking around. If course I would LIKE it... but I would probably expect something along the lines of $XXXXX/hr/year/day/week/whatever

Like DakarM said... always give a range... min being the absolute minimum you would take and the max being the most you think they would pay...

As for amounts... try:

Thanks for that site kd5dbl. I think i just figured out a good asking price. Since im looking at product consultation (helping the consumer chose what is best to have done to their car with specified marketed products designed for their cars) im guessing 17 an hour would be a low and 20 an hour be a maximum. What do yall think is this a good range to work with. ALso the job stated that some weekend and travel may be required to attend shows and to answer any questions people may have at those events.

I think my main concern with pay is that i dont want to give them a low ball asking price when everyonoe else is getting paid more money then i am, but i would like to be in the range as everyone that is in my position.

i've always heard the opposite. never give a figure otherwise you risk under or over-valueing yourself. i've heard that you give your current salary, and say something like, "this is what i make now and we've discussed my qualifications. given that, i'm sure you can come up with a figure that we will both agree is fair." and then leave it in their hands. if they do make an offer, then you decide if it's fair or not.

anyway, if you have no current or previous salary, i'm not sure what you would said, but like i said, i've always heard that it's bad to give a figure.

Here is what he wrote to me

This opening is for an entry level sales representative. The person would be given some existing accounts, but would be expected to do much prospecting for new customers. Base salary would be $20K, and you are also paid a commission on all sales to your customers. As with most sales positions, pay is commensurate to performance. A person who is aggressive, organized, and possesses good verbal communication skills can succeed in this position.
If you can be here tomorrow afternoon at 5:00pm, I look forward to speaking with you then.

So it looks like ill have an Interview tomorrow. Altho he said base pay is 20k i hope with my knowledge of cars(bmw persay) will help me get atleast a higher pay if not atleast my regular pay plus commission.

ANy tips on the interview. Remember this is for a high end performance company that specializes in euro cars. Is there anything that i need to do that will help me get a higher pay or to atleast get me the job. I have been working in the computer business and to be honest with you im really getting sick of it. I dont feel that i am goin any where with my company of 7 yrs. I am more then ready to make a big leap from one type of career to another. And this is something where i can learn alot about the automotive industry and may even be a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Ill keep yall posted , Thanks again for everyones advice
