If you want to be a mechanic, buy a Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi has been turning average joes into mechanics since 1987.

Well really you need to be very comfortable working on your own stuff to be able to start the path towards being a mechanic, but id imagine depending on your age, if your still in school, start taking shop classes, if your out find a good technical school. Learn on your own time by observing a friend or someone who knows there way around cars, then start taking on little things your self, try tougher jobs with the use of a shop manual. Best way to become a mechanic is to show proficiency in all things automotive.

Most technical schools have 2 years programs to get an associates, or a certificate in Auto Mechanics. Some have specialized programs geared towards motorsports too. You can probably get a job at a tire shop today, but it gets old real fast. A friend of mine works for Honda, he started out driving the cars from the shop, around front to the customers. Then oil changes, and so on. You might want to start a tool collection first because most places make you use your own tools. I think he owes Snap-on over $5K, and he still has to borrow tools at times from others.
