you can call it as soon as you start heading for the car, regardless if you can see it or not.
Not that my friends and I ever call shotgun anyway...usually the biggest person gets the front seat.

rules for my car:
If girls are involved: she sits in the front, no exceptions.
In the cases of multiple chicks: KY wrestling match to determine the winner, note, must clean off all KY before gettin into the car.
With just friends:
-If somebody is clearly a lot taller than the others, usually people will let him sit in the front, but thats just a courtesy thing, if they don't do that then the official rules are:
#1 we must be about to get in the car, none of this "when we go on a roadtrip in 3 weeks I got shotgun"
#2 You must be able to see the car
#3 racing to the car will get you nowhere, however, racing to be able to see the car first is allowed.
Once somebody has shotgun, if we stop someplace and they have to go and buy smokes, or run into a house and grab something, nobody can take the seat. Only if we all get out of the car and then leave again, can it be back up for grabs.
Any ties will be decided with a game of choose.

well, you really don't have to see the car if you call shotgun, you just need to be on your way there (according to the official rules). The only exception is if you have been on a hike or outing somewhere that leaves you returning to the car by default, because if you're like 5 miles away and it's the turn around point, then you shouldn't be able to call shotgun. In that case the rule applies where you must see the car before you can call it.
