My mom donated marrow.
They have to drill into your pelvis to extract it. Or maybe they just stick a bigass needle in there. Either way they poke a bunch of holes and you end up with a large bruised area on your hip with darker spots where the holes themselves are. Needless to say you are rendered unconscious for the procedure. She was in bed for at least a day if not longer.
It's also totally anonymous although I think in some cases if both parties agree on some other agreement then one can be made. I don't know for sure because my mom's recipient kept it anonymous. I do know that the guy ended up dying anyway.
It was probably 7 to 10 years ago so I'm a little foggy on the specifics.
