Default ATTN: photo posting peeps

Some of you guys that post pictures more often post them with some sort of "logo" located somewhere on the picture. Maybe to protect from use elsewhere or for some other reasons. What is the point of including this logo/sig in the pictures you post? The logo, is it copyrighted or trademarked somehow? Or is it simply something you thought about and include in all your photos like a personal trademark? I do amatuer photography and have many of my own pictures I would like to share wether on the inernet or elsewhere. Should I come up with something like that for my own as well?

And do I have to register it somewhere or simply include it in all the photos I publicly display? Any and all help with this would be appreciated. I think I may have something but need more info on this.

Yeha thats what i figured I think I have a "logo" sort of thing, thats my own thing. I'll apply it to all my publicly viewed photos. But theres no legal things to be done or registering of any sort?

I'm pretty sure that involves paying money to some goverment ruled agency...

Prolly cause its a PSD, save it as a JPG/GIF and it'll probably let you make the thumbnail etc..

Yeah I make mine light so that it is noticeable but not so obvious that someone has to chop it out to enjoy the image. some people watermark the entire image or right across the middle from corner to corner. Its all personal preference and it also lets people know that it is your image originally.

Even if you do not register your mark you have legal precedence. Since you have the original file as well as the original watermarked file then you can use that as evidence if someone were to use it in some way without your permission in say a publication, website, etc. As long as it retains that mark and is not used in publication they are within their rights. Once it is added without credit or payment they have overstepped their boundaries.

Hope that made sense

Yeah that helps. So there isn't much of a legal thing to go about it just precedence?
What fee is there to pay for my photo "tag"?

You have to sign up for a copyright and I think the fee is like $30 a year or something...not real sure. You can also register a watermark that makes it uniquely yours and it holds to similiar laws as copyrighting does...just not sure on all the legalities and limits of it.
