there's a book full of pictures dedicated to the freakish trends in japan. contains plenty of pictures of this kind of stuff, and other weird crap.
and yes, BC is completely wrong. friend of mine who lived in japan for almost 3 years, and whose wife is japanese, had this to say:
first of all, they're not called Kogals because they look like koalas... they're called Kogals because "ko" means child, or young. and a gal is a mature woman. so they're called Kogals because they're young girls dressing up and acting like older women. and that hasn't been in fashion for like 3 years. it's really outdated. the new thing now is to look as white as possible. ghastly white.

That fashion has been popular for a few years now, but its going out of style. And its being replaced by the next ugly fashion. And those girls are dumb as doornails.
The majority of Japanese girls aren't that. But they're nothing like what you see in anime either.

And you dont want to get into plastic surgery... In Asia they perform plastic surgery for things you'd never even notice.
In Korea its getting popular for women to have their ears stitched back so that they dont stick out so much; they're more flush to the head.
My wife, from Taiwan, years ago got surgery where they cut into her eyelids. She did this so that she'd have a fold in her eyelids like most westerners do.
Its a popular procedure.
Eventually it healed back to the way it used to be. So then she started using this special tape they sell out there which gives her those folds. She was using these things when I met her, and I've gotten her to stop using that crap... Thank god!
I knew this other girl who used those things and they were really obvious; it was like she had scotch tape for eyelids.
A lot of girls out there also have something against dark skin. So a lot of them use skin-whitening agents. You see these commercials on tv with these women who've got ghostly white skin. Everything is so blown out you can barely make out any features.
The craze in Japan with excessive tanning is connected to hip hop. Its essentially Japanese girls trying to look black. Sort of, there's more to it than that. But I think most Japanese girls prefer pasty white skin. And then they overdo it with makeup.
The cosmetics industry is huge in Asia; anything associated with women's fashion is. Thats why department stores will devote 5 out 8 floors to women. The first 1 or 2 are costmetics, and the next 3 or 4 are clothing.
Dieting is another huge problem. Many Japanese high school girls are getting fairly chubby. But for the most part they're nuts about being skinny. And when they're skinny they're thin as rails, to the point of being unnattractive. They dont have much of a figure.
I dont think they look any better for all the effort they put into their appearance. They end up looking like clones of each other. And a lot of girls lose their charm just to fit into these trends. Ultimately, its a big disappointment. At least I think it is.

Look, if I wanted to see that, I'd hit up the Daily Mainichi everyday.
Well, I hit up the Daily Mainichi everyday, even though I don't appreciate their uglyless idea of what photo-slideshows should include. :barf:
