from my experience, stay away from VIA chipsets. i've always found them to be severely unstable.

.
Definitely. Though if you can wait a couple months, the next-generation cards from both Nvidia and ATI should be hitting the stores. The 9800pro and 5900 Ultra should both be significantly cheaper than they are now or you can pony up the cash for the newest, best of the best.

Here is what I would get if I were u,

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ or higher
Shuttle AN50R nForce3 motherboard
1GB of ram such as corsair at leat pc3200
ATI Radeon 9800 pro or XT
two SATA maxtor hard drives and put them in RAID 0 using the onboard RAID controller found on the mobo
Make sure ur case has a lot of power in the PSU. I would stick above 400W

currently the lowest prices are at

www.zipzoomfly.com
www.newegg.com
www.excaliberpc.com

Oh yeah if u want something sleek go to excaliber and look at their Shuttle XPC system for AMD 64. It is the shit. Built one for my boss and it is just as capable but really small and sexy. If u bught that then all u would need is a cpu, ram, gfx, and hard drive. Really easy to build

except he's gonna run into cooling issues with two hard drives + an optical drive + cpu + high end graphics card. summer's coming and my shuttle xpc is starting to get too hot even with the case cover off.

IF you're using an AMD chip, then the Asus A7n8x-E Deluxe is a great board.

If you're going for Intel, I forget the name of the better board, but Asus is definitely a name to trust. I've owned at least 5 of their boards and only one had even a minor problem.

ive been throught prolly 8-10 motherboards now and ive found VIA chipsets to be as good as any other. ive had bad chipsets from every manufacturer. it just depends on the state of the bios and just the overall composition of the machine. when i choose a motherboard, i just look at the features i need and i choose one with a chipset thats been around for a while. even though you might not have the fastest board out there, you know all the bugs have been worked out of it. stability>speed any day

sorry, but thats just ignorant. ive heard so many people say that and its just not true. intel is all about marketing and frankly, people buy their chips because they saw the commercial on tv. IMO AMD and Intel are about on par with eachother. sometimes one is ahead of the other in technology and speed but theyre both great brands. the difference being that AMD gives you the same performance for typically less money. intel has to pay the marketing bill somehow

btw ive got an AMD 2500+ barton and its a beast. i havent overclocked it yet but i know when i decide to i can get up pretty high with it

do you guys know what hard drives are good? i bought a couple maxtor 160 giggers last summer and in like 7 months one of em died on me. i still havent returned it though. i just hate having to trust 160 gigs to an unreliable drive.
