17/225/40
i know the 17 is rim size
225 is the width
but what is the "40" in the tire code?


also what are the letters for?

letters are the speed ratings i believe. the "40" is the sidewall's height, which is a percentage of the width (in MM) of the tire.

letters indicate:
speed rating (ex: h,v,w,z)
construction (R = radial...hardly any non-commecial tire is a bias ply)
traction (ex: c, b, a, aa)
mud & snow capability (m+s)

more like 225/40/17 in most cases.


225 = width

40 = height (profile)

17 = size


T, H, V, Z, W, Y are all speed ratings. check out tirerack.com for more info.

anyone know the lowest produced side wall rating? I think I've seen 30 and thats it.

i think 25?? continental is the only company that makes it.... i think.
