I'm a huge hard bop fan... i've been collecting hard bop albums for like 7 years. Some of my favorites:

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - A Night in Tunisia (this is probably my all-time favorite album/track)
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Clifford Brown and Max Roach - Basin Street
Miles - Milestones
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out

Some good non-hard bop albums (I'm a guitar guy, so these are the modern guitar wizzards that I dig just because they're really good)
Larry Corryel - Monk, Trane, Miles and Me
Mark Elf - New York Cats

:edit:I've met both these guys(^^^), and have signed copies of their cd's

Miles Davis: Kind of Blue.

I love that album.

And Absolutely anything by uncle Louis (L. Armstrong)

If you ever get into jazz/funk, Tower of Power is great listening too. Start off with their self titled album.

Nothing swings harder than the Count Basie "Atomic Basie" album. This is the album to get for a musician that is learning to feel swing.

You should also own Miles Davis "kind of blue" and "sketches of spain"

There are so many, but these are good to start with. What type of jazz do you like? My fav. be bob artist is Clifford Brown (trumpet).
