Default Signs that a country is totalitarian:

They have a huge explosion in a train station that kills hundreds of people, but there are no pictures of the scene, no official statements from the government, and the state-run news media doesn't report it.

Yesterday there was a huge train crash in North Korea, where several hundred people were killed and thousands injured, and there's a big freaking crater in the ground where the train station used to be.

Basically, us folks out here in the rest of the world know more about what happened than the people who freakin live in North Korea.

Oh, and what was on the news last night instead of reports of the explosion? They talked about Kim Jong-Il's trip to China.

Yup, North Korea sucks.

His personal train went through the station 9 hours before the explosion.

On the same note... how do you feel about Bush trying to prevent images of the war coffins being sent home from being published. His biggest fear is that those images would strike "anti-war" sentiments, which of course would be bad for him on election year.

I firmly believe that if something happened, we have the right to know about it and that includes all types of media, be it photos, video, or whatever.

I could go off on Bush, but I've done enough of that lately. So I'll just say that North Korea sucks. Plus, I don't want this thread to get needlessly politicized by mentioning dubya and something he supposedly did wrong.

And according to what I've read, the first reaction to the explosion was to sever media communication with the outside world to avoid "leaks" of information. :eh: That kind of modus operandi is really disturbing IMO...not to pick at old wounds, but it seems like the same attitudes that arose when the Kursk sank in the North Atlantic..

Tragic.

We need the On-topic section back, the days of bashing people for their lack of knowledge in political matters was pretty interesting.

F'ck North Korea, I don't understand why everyone is overlooking that country. Far greater threat than any of the other rogue states. I remember watching a documentary of the living conditions over there, talk about a mind-f'ck.
