What digital camera would you recommend for $400ish?

The Canon A80 is really nice and it looks like you should be able to get one for ~$350 before you add in things like shipping and a higher capacity memory card. The S50 is also really nice; a bit more compact, 5 megapixel instead of 4 on the A80, but it appears to be not as plentifully available.

The Nikon 4300 and Olympus C-4000 are also worth a look. Though I will say a friend of mine has the Olympus and the user interface is a little clumsy in comparison to the typical Canon layout.

I am absolutely, positively head over heels in  with my Canon A80; I recommend very, very highly. And while the Kodak had a nice user interface, the lens is shite. The Canon is very flexible and I'm very impressed with the computer interface software as well.

If you can find a Canon A80 for a price that fits your budget, I'd jump on it.

If you're looking to shoot movies, get a real video camera, preferably MiniDV.

You'll probably be happy with anything from Sony, Canon, Olympus, et al. All of these manufacturers are known for good build quality and good engineering. Olympus in particular makes outstanding small digital cameras that produce good quality images and cost less than a similarly equipped competing model. You'll pay a little more for a Canon or Nikon and the reason is the quality of the lens glass. Sony tends to be overpriced, but a Sony on sale could be a good deal.

Don't worry about buying the outgoing model. Canon releases firmware updates.

Take a look through the last couple of days of posts; there have been a couple of threads regarding photography.

just got back from playing with all the cameras at ciruit city and i think i've made up my mind on the A80. Its pretty much what i'm looking for and I found out that you can attach two other types of lenses for additional zoom or wide angle shots. So I'm all over it as soon as they go on sale again.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I have an Olympus C-4000 I picked up used for 350 with a 128 card and card reader and I love the hell out of it. If you want images from the camera I have tons you can look at and I can show you its very limits for low light shooting with no flash use as well.
