I don't have my heart set on an assisted knife....if its a regular knife but it opens easily enough, I could deal with it. I'm not looking for anything huge...maybe a 4" blade or so. Something small enough to put in the little hidden pocket in the front of my uniform pants. I'll have to look into those Kershaws. Anyone know any good places online to buy them?

I have one Gerber knife. It's a non-folding blade. Just has a plastic sheath. pretty nice little thing.

My favorite knife has for to be my Cold Steel SRK. High carbon steel so the blade won't break. It'll bend under enough stress, but it won't break. My pops tells me that it's the same knife that Seals commonly use.

Torsion-bar assisted, so CA legal. But I don't like them too much because the safety can be inconvenient, and frankly requires too much fiddling if you need the blade out quickly.

Kershaw knives are good, but I don't think I'll ever own one. I'd spend the extra money and get a Benchmade or an Emerson, so spend the same amount and get a Cold Steel.

Here's a better question... will this be a tool knife, or a self-defense knife?

Then I'd go with the Cold Steel Recon 1 or the Emerson Wave. Find a local knife shop and check them out.

For a backup combat knife folder to instantly cover your ass, I'd most definitely look at an Emerson Wave. It would have no benefit if hidden in a secret pocket, but if you are in a situation where you can reach your regular pocket and pull it out, it will be ready quicker than a switchblade.
