The entire car is flawed in comparison to say, the early 90's 840Ci / 850Ci or the earllier 635CSi.
But the major things that bug me are the trunklid, taillight forms and how they seem slapped together, with no thought about how to design a relevant form.
Ditto the headlights and grille. The whole front end is a composition of elements that can't seem to decide whether they're ovoid or rectangular. The headlights are set too low on the car, and the grille lacks any relevance to the overall design of the car.

I am much more in favor of the minute refinements made to a classic design, like the continued honing of the Porsche 356 into todays Carrerra GT or 911 GT2. Within the BMW lineup, the E39 7-series is my absolute favorite "modern" BMW sedan. For a BMW coupe, I'm torn between the E36 M3 and the 3.0 CSL coupe [from the days of the 2002].

Hopefully this puts my POV in a larger frame of reference. h:
And yes, I'm an opinionated SOB on this issue. I get that a lot.

I personally don't like the m5 kit on non-m e39's. I saw one the other day and was like ooooh nice and then saw the back and it was a 530i. h:
