why does wind come in thru side windows and not the moonroof
Airflow dynamics.
The air goes over the windshield and raises above the roofline for a bit which clears the sunroof.
On the vents it is running on the side of the car and has nothing that forces the air away from the window in any way.

Airflow is really kinda simple when you think about it.
Air will flow in a path of least resistance and much like anything else if you give it a ramp then the general mass of the wind will flow accordingly as though a bike or car taking a jump. It leaves the surface for a point then returns to the surface. How long this affect lasts depends solely on the object it is moving against and its velocity.

I've done the windows up top down thing. The way the windshield is shaped, it smooths airflow over it but not to the sides. So the air pushed to the side of the windshield is much more turbulent and swirls back into the cabin. The air pushed up by the windhield flows smoothly and just keeps going.
