we watched a video in soc 101 today on conforming. it was taped off 20/20. it was very interesting.

there was 6 people in a room and they had to answer which line matched another lien from the chart A b or c ( as below ) .

the first 5 people would all choose the incorrect answer (all being the same answer) and when it got to the last guy he would be pressured into saying the wrong answer..it was really weird how that works.

would you be influnced by other answers to go along with them, just so u wouldn't feel weird? interesting.

Well the obvious answer is line 1 matches A.

If that is the correct answer form my observation then I would not be persuaded at all to change my mind for any reason given.

I prob would go with my gut instinct...no matter what everyone said...if it was something more complex than this, and I was unsure, then of course I would go with the answer chosen by the other 5 ppl.

Another great portrayal of anti-conformity came in a South Park episode...Stan gets dumped by Wendy and joins the Goths (non-conformists)...very funny, and verry true....

 

see but the thing is, 5 people beforeu oculd give ur answer would say that A matched 2..all of them. even on people who said they were non-conformist started to say the wrong answers becaused they were having slef-doubt and such.

 

I'm learning all about that stuff in my social psych class. Very interesting.

This is true and using the example given everyone could say line 3 was the correct answer and that would be the non conformist answer in all reality. The reason being is that line 1 being the obvious correct answer a non conformist would probably select the least like it just to not fit the conformity they were looking for

By all of them giving the wrong answere one after the other it shows that those who were supposed to be non conformists were conforming to those around them in theor nonconformity.
