Default lip protector? or different purpose?

Ok I dont even know what these things are called, nor do i know the purpose of them, sooo thats why im asking. Is it just to protect the lip or are they supposed to help w/ aerodynamics?? Sorry the pic isnt great, but if you've seen them before you'll know what im talking about.

p.s I put this here cause the civic forum is dead h:

I believe they are called "cannards" and they help with aerodynamics to create more downforce for the front of the car. Anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

On most cars they serve no purpose, race cars they add downforce. So IMO most of the time they are like streamers on a little girl's bike, they look pretty but do nothing.
