Glenwood Springs Wal-Mart employees were terrified when a man who later turned out to be pop music star Michael Jackson walked into their store wearing a ski mask over his face, authorities say.
"They were concerned what was going on," said Lt. Bill Kimminau, Glenwood Springs police spokesman. "They had no idea who he was."
Just two years ago on Father's Day, a man entered the store and fatally shot fellow worker Tom Lubchenco, 56, during an attempted robbery.
"It put them on edge considerably when a man walked in wearing a ski mask," Kimminau said of the latest incident.
Store employees called police about 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, saying the masked man and another man had climbed into a black sport utility vehicle and were headed toward Aspen, he said.
A few blocks from the store, a police officer pulled the SUV over, Kimminau said. Jackson was still wearing the mask, he said.
The officer ordered him to remove the mask, Kimminau said. The policeman recognized Jackson and realized there was no cause for concern and said, "OK, thank you."
The officer briefly spoke to the driver and let the two men drive away, Kimminau said.
Running into famous people isn't rare in Glenwood Springs, he said.
"This close to Aspen, we come into contact with celebrities," Kimminau said.
Two years earlier, Wal-Mart employees weren't as fortunate.
About 11:30 p.m. on June 16, 2002, a man wearing a black ballcap and coat struck one store employee on the head and shot Lubchenco to death in a storeroom.
Jackson spokeswoman Raymone Bain said Tuesday's incident was a trifle.
"The police car pulled to the side and just asked that he show his face, and he did, and that was it," Bain said. "There was no altercation or any kind of encounter."
Jackson is staying at a 56-acre ranch in Old Snowmass while vacationing with his children. He has been keeping a relatively low profile in the area but has been spotted at several shops in nearby Aspen.
The pop star is facing child-molestation charges in California and is fighting for the custody of his own children.
Jackson's visit to Aspen was announced in a news release Bain issued Feb. 20 to address rumors the singer had checked himself into a drug-rehabilitation facility in Colorado.
"Michael's children indicated to him a few days ago that they'd like to see and play in the snow," Bain said. "Mr. Jackson was enjoying his getaway until ... someone deliberately and viciously began reaching out to media organizations with this claim."
