Clamp down on genital choccies
From correspondents in Seoul
February 13, 2004
SOUTH Korea's Food and Drug Administration has banned cheeky St Valentine's Day chocolates shaped like genitals or couples making love.
The administration said 15 firms including an Internet shopping site were targeted by the ban on lewd candy that officials say could give the wrong idea to sweet-toothed youngsters.
"Ahead of the St Valentine's Day, we cracked down on 15 firms which have produced or distributed illegal chocolate products," the administration said in a statement.
"Some of the chocolate candies depict couples engaged in sexual intercourse or were in the shape of the male genital," Park In-Won, an administration official told AFP.
The agency said the 15 firms would either receive official warnings to stop producing those products or face a two-month business suspension.
In South Korea, women are the givers and men the receivers on St Valentine's Day, and candies are the gift of choice. On March 14, men return the favour.
