Default Performance chips

I did a search already (I promise!), and it seems like alot of people dont like the performance ECU chips, especially the Venom 400 and the Jet Chip. I want a performance chip for my GS-R and I dont know what to look for since those are the two I was looking at. On Ebay, chips seem to be selling for at least $25!!!! I thot they were a couple hundred!?!?!? I also heard that an upgraded ECU chip was the way to go for increasing horsepower besides slapping a turbo on (which requires some engine modification as far as I know before your engine dies), but what one should I be looking at? Prices? HP gain? Torque gain?

They really don't produce much power at all. They change fuel and timing curves, raise redline (you'd better be built to handle that) and change VTEC engagement points...some chips also don't look for certain sensors. The chip may cost $25, but you have to take your ECU to someone who is experienced in soldering to install a socket for the chip, so the board on the ECU doesn't get damaged.

Unless you have a built engine they are pretty useless.

As for Venom and Jet chips...Venom chips are ok, I haven't used them but I have herd fair feedback on them.

Jet chips = shit

Chips on Hondas don't do much. On VW they can add like 50hp with just a chip. But don't have such high expectations on a Honda.

If the engine is built and the fuel curves are maped correctly then it can make or break a build...on a turbo car it is a must on all motor it is a definite plus...ever try to run 11.7:1 compression on a stock ECU? I have and it sucks.

If your car isn't built...or turboed, you probably dont need it.

If you have a built engine, don't skimp out and just run a chipped ECU. The problem with these piggyback EBAY chips is that they aren't matched correctly to the build, and often result in a worse tune. The reason they add so much on a VW is by altering boost as well.

Reprogrammed = chipped, unless you have a stand alone engine management. People can make custom chips with the right software, but it's not the most effective way of tuning.
