Prolly everyone knows my opinion on this, but here's my suggestion: Have her play with a mac for a bit, and see if she likes it. Macs are really easy to adapt to, and are really stable machines.

If she's willing to spend more money for the mac, then she will get a better product IMO

lots here: http://www.bensbargains.net/

Configure and select the following options: 512MB DDR, Dual Drives 16x DVD + 48x CDRW, Dell UltraSharp 1800FP 18.1" Digital LCD +$340. The price comes to = $838 with free shipping.

Pentium-4 2.66GHz, XP Home, 512MB DDR, Dell Keyboard/Mouse, WordPerfect

40GB, Integrated Video, 5.1 Audio, 10/100, Free ISP, 16x DVD-ROM Drive + 48x CD-RW, 1800FP 18.1" LCD

for watching TV I would upgrade to 1801FP or 1901FP for a little more money. add tv tuner card and you are done. alternatively she can just get the ATI all in wonder card (i think) directly from dell preinstalled.

well if she wants support... I don't want to start a debate about mac vs pc.... but if she's going mac, she better have a good friend that is a mac guru. Most people do not know mac's and won't help with them.

She'll need a good friend with mac skills and the apple number handy.

PC's do have the benefit of being able to be supported just about anywhere.

Get a PC plain and simple...you can run these programs on a MAc but the PC emulators tend to be a bit slow and can cuse some problems here and there.

I know I am probably gonna catch some shit for that comment but its just the way it is.

If she's lookin to run office and other such basic apps, then the Mac is a viable choice... Hell.... Office for OS X (Office v.X) is better than the PC counterpart!

And most major office apps have a mac counterpart, with the exception of the hand-coded in house apps...

is she trying to save money....i've been using the 900mhz widescreen ones here at school for the year and they havent been bad at all.
PC speeds and Mac speeds shouldnt be compared ghz for ghz....just like amd and intel
