 Found some of the best bands through mp3.com. When you are a small time band just looking to get some listeners you take personal interest in your fans. I've talked through email/IM to a lot of the members in the bands I listen to frequently.

I think I downloaded a few songs from there once. They were ok but not good enough to keep. I'd rather hear a band live and then buy their CD.

That takes $$$, heck I still haven't seen Dream Theater or Rush in concert and they are 2 of my favorite bands.

yeah but those are big name bands that you won't find on mp3.com. I would go see the small bands or sorta small bands live for free or for a small charge ($10-20). I bought two cds that way so far and I don't see live bands all that much.
