Default car question...

my friend heather just called me saying she was driving with her cruise control on, and then all of a sudden the rpm gauge and speeo dropped to 0, she pulled over and turned it off, and when she started again it was fine. then i got another call 5 minutes later, and she said it did it again while at a stop sign, any ideas what could cause that, or what i could tell her to do? thanks

What kind of car?

My Accord does that sometimes, appears that Honda had an issue with the Vehicle Speed Sensor after they switched from the cables in 94. See if it throws a code.

The gauges flatlined, but the car kept running fine? :dunno:

Hmm.. what model car is this? Sounds like some strange electrical problem to me.... a fawked up harness somewhere. :eh: Or a bum VSS.

A mechanical speedo wouldn't do that, for instance...so this must be a new-ish car.

it's a 97 ford contour.. her check engine light has been on for a long time, but since it just did that, the CEL went off :dunno:

Ask her to check the code. If the CEL was on and it wasn't checked then there could have been a problem that got worse.
