can all this terrible damage be done by doing this once or it has to be many times any damage is done?

Generally after the engine is started, it's a good idea to let go of the key and not touch it again till it's time to turn off the car.

Doing that once, ok an accident.

Twice, you should have learned.

3rd... your an idiot and shouldn't be in a car, driving or not.
