Maybe cause I'm not in one... I don't see unions being helpful to anyone other than themselves and the union as a whole.

Like the telco RLEC or ILEC. Takes 5 diffrent guys to do simple things cause they are union.

i remember when i first got hired at sam's. they fed me sooo much anti-union bullshiit on my first day [orientation videos] that i believed it. where i work now, the union is for making sure that each employee gets the hours that he/she is promised, temp or seasonal employees dont get our work, we are guaranteed our periodic raises, we are guaranteed our benefits, and several other reasons... One disadvantage is that you get paid slightly less than you would expect to make, in exchange for better benefits. But its a small price to pay for having guaranteed hours/benefits.

Also, everything is done based on seniority, so that asskissers dont get the vacations/promotions just because they kiss ass.

an advantage for the company is that the union promotes long-term employment and helps a lot when it comes to employee turnover losses. a disadvantage is that like you said, they sometimes have to "ok" things with the union before they get done.
btw, whats telco rlec or ilec?

Well yes, it does help keep out the ass kissers. However, in our situation, sometimes the guy that's been there longer doesn't mean he's better.

Sometimes the new guys, >3years, are better than the guys that have been there for 20+ years. In that situation, it's a bad idea.

RLEC ILEC CLEC... it's what KIND of telephone company. R is for RURAL. Meaning the majority of the area the cover is rural area. Also RLEC's and ILEC's can't cross each others bounds. Where as a CLEC can, but doesn't "own" any lines. It's all very confusing... and I might even have ILEC and CLEC backwards.

true. it kinda sucks in that aspect. but it works out in places that have position for those types of people. here, people that been working that long become semi drivers for the company, or they do some sort of job that demands a lot of training, but isn't as active.
