Usually if the name is Jonathon the H is left out of the name altogether and therefore when abbreviated it becomes Jon.
Now if you are of swedish birth it is always spelled Jon and pronounced yawn rather than the hard J.
I believe John is an american spelling commonality since you rarely see any other country spell John with an H.
Therefore John with an H owns Jon without the H because it would be more unique in that respect.
