Default Northern Lights

Has anyone here actually seen these in person? They look awesome in pictures but I wonder how they actually look. Are they as bright in real life or are they actually pretty dim?

ive seen them before...in my astronomy class in the planetarium. h:

Last time I saw them it was all green (no purple) and waving like water not nearly that bright but bright enough that you notice.

I have seen them and like g2tegls said they were green.
