Default what causes the bushings on your shifter to wear out?

someone told me i was going to wear out my bushings because. what exactly do they mean? and what causes this? he didn't seem to be able to provide a reason as to why my bushings would wear out

Age makes rubber get hard and crack apart. Other than that not much will wear them.

It will be hard as shit to get the car into gear because there is too much free play in the shifter.
