THIS is a router. you plug it into the cable modem.
On that, there are several jacks that you can plug ethernet cords into. Plug two identical ethernet cables into the available jacks, and then one goes into one computer's network card, and the other cable goes into the OTHER computer's network card.

okay, some questions
seems like you guys recommend linksys routers, why not go with a fry's 39.99 router?
and should i go wireless or no?

wireless or no?
pro: (imo)
-no cables to run if you live in a house with 2 stories
con:
-more expensive since you will have to buy the USB adapters while chances are you already have NIC cards
-speeds, you get a fast constant speed with wires. whereas with wireless, depending on the location of the computer and router, speeds can vary...sometimes drastically.
-maybe minute security issues
thats all i can think of. :dunno: i have a wireless router that can also take in cat5 wire. so you can grab one of those and try out the wireless connection, and if you dont like...grab a cat5 cable.

With a good Linksys router you'll get a hardware firewall, which is infinitely better than software.
Network Interface Card cards? :chuckles:
