Apathy Kills
Congrats, sounds like a cool gig. And you'll find no bigger fan of fuel-cell drivetrains than I.

Do you know where you're going to work? At the tech center?
My brother lives very close to the tech center; he's near 19 mile and van dyke. The area to the north of the tech center (Sterling Heights and Warren) is very nice, and I highly recommend that you buy a house there asap if you are going to be staying in Detroit for any length of time. Renting in that area is much more expensive than buying. My brother got his 3br 2 bath w/ 2 car detached garage for ~$100k a couple years ago and prices have dropped since then. If you're willing to do a little paint/drywall repair/flooring, you should be able to pick up a house in the area for 80-90k. Otherwise, it's 100-110k.
Let me know if you need any help or info.
Oh, and do not wander south of the freeway (696). Pretty much anything south of 10 mile is bad, and it gets worse the farther south you go.

Maybe I'll move to Ferndale to be with my people. <3

After asking around, my understanding is that GM is building a new facility in Milford at the GM Proving Grounds, and that their alternative fuel departments will be moving out that direction. If that's the case, you'll want to hold off on buying anything, as that would be a significant commute from Royal Oak or the like. Milford is on the edge of the metro Detroit area, so you can easily live someplace more rural if you want. Novi is also pretty nice and convenient to Milford.

hmmm. They just moved Fuel Cell from Rochester, NY (go figure?) to Pontiac so I doubt they'll move again so soon (new lab), but with a big company who knows...
Okay if I live in Novi I want a McMansion. No, I want a big koi pond.
