Default How to build and upgrade my computer

I bought the new sim city game yesterday only to find out my computer is under qualified to play the game.
I have a best buy credit card so that's were I'm going to shop.

The computer I have is a Dell inspiron 531. I have no idea what the specs are (I'm not a computer guy)
I thought all I needed was a graphics card but then I was told I might need a higher power watt output something like that...

I asked geek squad if the inspiron 531 was good to build but the guy said he has no idea lintel he buts the parts in.
And I have windows 7 btw, how do I upgrade that?

I pretty much want to keep the computer I have and upgrade everything so I can use my game. Is this computer I have worth the money to build?

Doesn't dell have a proprietary MoBo or PS in it? I seem to remember they and Emachines were doing this to stall upgrades.

best bet is to go on Newegg and start from scratch. Because in order to "upgrade" your current PC to be able to game, you'll more than likely have to buy a new motherboard, in which case you'll need a graphics card and depending on what your stock PC's power supply supports, you might have to buy a new power supply. Granted if you have like 4-6GB of RAM, you can go on that for the time being. It also depends on what processor your currently have as well.

I got the computer in 2007 lol.
I just came back from best buy and I bought the GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics card and a 550 watt power supply. They said tomorrow come pick it up and it'll be ready.
With the game, parts and installation included I'm down like almost $350 bucks just to play this game smh.
Since I put this much money on the tower already is it worth going all out and complete the build? Sound card, upgrade to hd a Monitor and buy windows 8?

Make that the web, email, movie comp and update to a new computer within spec of the game you want to play. Its cheaper in the end that way.

That's my thought. For $500 could probably buy a new computer.

you don't want to upgrade your computer only to find out that the game is total shit.

Read the reviews before doing anything.

SimCity 4, the best in the series, is 75% off on Steam ($5) and will run fine on an older machine.
