the build quality of german roads is a lot better than it is here. imagine hitting a pothole at 150 mph. plus they are a lot stricter about giving out drivers licenses over there compared to here.
I think the speed limit should be raised, but not to unlimited. Everyone here always does 70 in a 55 and its accepted. So just raise the limit to 70. Even if people drive 15 over 85 isn't that fast.
Here's what needs to happen:
1) Driver Licensing needs to be overhauled completely.
2) Road Repairs need to be made a priority over prison construction (e.g. Given as much or more money)
3) Road Patrol forces need to shift from draconian speed enforcement to ensuring driver safety.
4) Cell phones and cupholders are banished from all vehicles.
5) The vehicle code is overhauled to reinforce the discipline required on de-regulated highways. (see 3)

We can't have an autobahn until police and drivers concentrate more on things OTHER than speed. Most european places care less of your speed and more of if you used your turn signal and are in the correct lane and the correct time and following traffic patterns and flow.
We in the US are diffrent, they care more about speed than anything else. I've personally seen more accidents just simply because someone didn't use a turn signal, than for speeding.
