its actually not as weird feeling as you guys might think
when you put it in reverse, you have to really nail it to the left then up to get it engaged. its way out there in the gear box. you'd have to be a complete retard to accidentaly put it into reverse instead of 1st

when i first started driving my vw, i used to put it into reverse instead of 1st, but now, im loving the reverse position

On every manual VW I've shifted you actually had to press the shifter downward towards the ground and than shift into R to get it to go.

I still have a problem when I drive my e30 and then drive my civic and vice versa. I don't mind either position, as long as I get into reverse gear and my car moves.

Also that shifter is very short, reminds me of when I was tempted to get a z4 3.0 shifter for my e30.

thats generally the idea, yup, but there is a piece of plastic that prevents you from going into reverse without pushing down. but that piece was worn out on mine. i replaced it. so i didn't have to push down to get into reverse
