buying new wheels, what do you think of these?
If you can fit wide tires under your car then get wide wheels to mount em on. A VW is not a car that wide tires can fit under.
The biggest wheel I personally would put on an MkII VW is a 16x7.5".

Let's put it this way: the only people who don't think the phat lip craze is gay are VW owners.
I'm not speaking as a Honda owner, I'm speaking as someone who likes most cars (including some VWs as long as I don't have to drive the damn things). Phat lips are for stupid trend whore VW owners. Don't be a trend whore.

Only trend whore 240SX people who showed up after the dR1fTa shit caught on run huge lips. To get the right sized 9" wide wheel, the offset does create a decent sized lip. Nothing like what people put on VWs though.
16x9s on a VW will not help you for racing. They are heavy and you can't fit a wide enough tire for them inside your fenders.
You want a nice regular 16x7" or 16x7.5" and a 205/45-16 tire. Any wider of a rim and all you'll be doing is stretching the tire which compromises its ability to stick to the road.
Here.
Get 16x7" BBS RX at $229 a pop.

And then for tires there's a couple choices depending on how sticky you want to go and how much you want to spend. In 205/45-16 you can get Yokohama AVS ES100 for $78 a pop.
If you want more stick there's the Pirelli PZero Nero at $118 each or the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 at $116.
All prices are from tirerack.com.
You'll have some wheels that suit the style of the VW without looking stupid or weighing too much, plus a correctly sized tire that is nice and sticky.

i just like the look of a deep dished rim. i know the 9 inch wide rim is going to weigh more, but it looks good. just like i dont understand why people put +60 offset rims on their hondas with a sunken in look. ihate that look, but i guess some people like it. different strokes
For the MKII Jetta those would be pretty sweet. I have a friend that has the Mili Miglia version of those on his GTi and it works.
Edit: This was a comment on the first set of RH rims you posted.
